There was an international flavour to rounds 2 and 3 of the Mighty Minis Championship as for the first time in 4 years it visited the French track of Croix-En-Ternois.

Just an hours drive South East of Calais, this small circuit consists manly of tight hairpins connected to a fast main straight which makes overtaking notoriously difficult. It is also a track that is tough on tyres and brakes. Though there was a threat of rain, qualifying saw little drama for Comis as he put in 3rd fasted time. By the afternoon the Sun was beaming down on the track as the amalgamated “Mightys” (the feeder championship) and “Supers” took their positions on the grid for the Saturday race.

Comis made a solid start as the growl of engine revs was converted into motion as the red lights went out. Through the 1st hairpin Comis was door handle to door handle with 4th place. Accelerating hard to the 2nd hairpin and both cars were still matching each other under breaking with just inches between them. As the race drew on, Alex dropped back from the lead 3, but with the back markers appearing on the horizon, Comis's driving indicated that he was keen to scythe through the pack and make time on the leaders.

Often locking the inside wheel under braking as he lunged up the inside of back markers, Alex was soon making headway on 3rd whose engine was sounding sick. On the last lap, Comis made a late breaking manoeuvre into the 1st hairpin to pass yet more back markers. Squeezed to the inside by two cars having their own mighty battle, Comis's luck ran out as at the last moment the brakes locked, resulting in him disappearing into the gravel trap. Keeping his foot down, he ploughed though the gravel trying to drive out of it only to get beached feet from rejoining the race. “Totally gutted” were the words from Alex as he and his car got towed back to the Pits. “I can't blame the guys having their own battle, and in hindsight I should have waited. I had to push hard though as 3rd was a real possibility”.

Sunday's race took place under heavy clouds, and with the drying track still damp from overnight rain, the weather would play a vital part in round 3. Again, off the start, Comis made a good get-away and stuck with the pack. After a few caution laps, Alex was soon putting in solid lap-times in the changing conditions as the rain returned. Again the back-markers began to play a role in the race, and Comis was timing his moves to perfection in the greasy conditions. With headlights ablaze, all of a sudden he was challenging for 3rd, but with only one lap left he had his work cut out.

Pushing as hard as he could, he controlled a magnificent drift that looked poetic, but wasn't the fastest way around the last few corners. Crossing the line, Comis took 4th place with 3rd just inches ahead of him. “Well, it was a good race for me, and after yesterday I'm happy to take the points. I went for a soft set-up as I didn't think the track would dry, it seemed to work quite well”. Round 4 moves closer to home and the historic track of Silverstone on the 14th May. Alex has always performed well at the Northamptonshire track, and he'll be looking to stamp some authority on the championship.
