The 2006 Super Mighty Minis Championship ended in true nail biting fashion with Alex Comis finish in 3rd place, and nearly snatching 2nd in the final round.

With such a strong finish, the 2007 season looks to be one of the closest contested championships yet. Round 1 took kicked off at Mallory Park on a glorious Easter Monday.

Qualifying went smoothly for Alex who was putting consistently fast laps. Although looking strong, he would end up on the 3rd row of the grid with only one second covering the top 8 cars! “The car is very quick here; I made some changes to the geometry of the front suspension and it’s completely changed the car. It took me all session to get used to the improved front-end grip. I’m more than confident that I can get more speed out of it in the race.

It should be good.” With the grid forming, the mood was intense. As the red lights came on, the familiar sound screaming engines being held back began to grow. As the lights when out the field of minis launched towards the first corner. Comis, taking the unorthodox route round the outside, continued to apply pressure thought the opening lap. With such hair raising close competition, contact was almost inevitable.

Five minuets into the race and the chaotic choreography was brought to an abrupt end as the race was stopped to recover a rolled car. Thankfully the reinforced safety cage of the car and the quick thinking rescue crews meant the driver was shaken and not stirred. At the re-start, Alex made good ground and was fighting for position with the leaders. Alex put in a fantastically executed move around the hairpin overtaking not one, but two cars as they headed to the flag.

By the end of the race, 1 second covered the top 6 cars with Alex nailing 4th place, as well as claiming fastest lap and beating last years Champion. “Heck, that was a fraught race” exclaimed Alex. “I’m over the moon with the 1st fastest lap of the season. I’m also glad to hear Andy [Harrison] is all ok after a nasty looking roll. With 4th place and points for fastest lap I’m in a strong position for the rest of the season.

Round 2 moves onto the Northamptonshire track or Rockingham on the 28th April.
