The picturesque countryside of Derbyshire was the setting for rounds 5 and 6 of the Super Mighty Minis Championship at the epic Donington Park. With pole position and fastest lap accolades still fresh in his mind, Alex was keen to recreate the successes he had at Silverstone.

With new front brake discs, pads and tyres, putting a fast lap together in qualifying would be quite the challenge for Comis. An early “banker” lap was followed by a succession of very gentle laps before Alex opened the taps for one last flyer. An uncharacteristic 9th would be his starting point for race one. “I wasn’t expecting to be on pole with all the new bits needing to go though a heat cycle, but I made a couple of errors which compounded the problem.

I should be able to improve in the race though” explained Comis with a wry smile. With the Red lights holding the field, the 1st race of the day was soon underway. The 16 competitors all made clean starts as cars darted left to right before filing though turn one; Redgate Corner. By the end of lap one, Comis had already scythed his way though most of the field. By mid distance he and David Kirkpatrick were battling hard for position. As the race entered the final stages they passed and re-passed each other countless time until they collided on the fastest part of the track. The contact sent both cars careering into the chicane at an alarming speed in a cloud of tyre smoke and screaming rubber.

Unfortunately David’s car refused to start after the spin and he was relegated to last place. Miraculously, after a brief excursion across the grass, Comis’ was able to rejoin the track without losing a position. David was less lucky and was relegated to last place. After more contact on the penultimate corner, Comis recovered to 6th place missing out on 5th by the narrowest of margins. Race 2 started in the finishing order form race one. With the red lights out, all the cars launched off the grid to and once again jockeyed for position into Redgate Corner. Comis cheekily pulled a move around the outside that sow him up into 4th place. Though short lived he maintained 5th as the field began to spread out. Yet again, a charging David Kirkpatrick was soon in the mix after starting last.

With the race nearing its climax, Dave managed to get ahead of both Comis and James Young, and then started to drive a defensive race; backing Comis and Young into the chasing pack. With 7 cars now squabbling for position like a swam of bees, Comis pulled an audacious passing move on Young into the start finish chicane. After an enthralling race that kept the spectators on their toes 5th to 11th places all crossed the line within 2 seconds of each other with Comis crossing the line in 9th. Once out of the car Comis was impressed with his fellow competitors. “That was an amazing race though my final position wasn’t in any way ideal! Dave Kirkpatrick drove faultlessly to keep the pack behind him.

I just wish his tyres went off before he caught me!” Round 7 is at Mallory Park Leicestershire on the 2nd July. A track where Comis has always performed well at, he will be looking to close the gap to 2nd place in the Championship!
