The finale of the 2007 Super Mighty Minis Championship revisited the East Anglia track of Snetterton. Rounds 12 and 13 would be the crucial decider for the top for drivers fighting for Championship glory.

Somewhat unusually for this season, the sun made a welcome, if late, appearance for the show down. Qualifying saw Comis bag a 3rd row grid slot though he was convinced he had more to offer in the race; “With such fast straights the aerodynamic tow from cars in front is paramount for a quick lap.

Unfortunately I made an error on my last lap, which cost me. Still, the car is going really well here so it should be a good race” As the sun continued to oversee proceedings, the penultimate race of the season was soon underway. Another electrifying start from Comis saw him tuck in behind Championship leader Pat Ford at they headed for the super fast Riches Corner. On to the epic Revett Straight and Comis was a looking like a man on a mission.

By the end of the lap a decisive move into the Russell chicane put Comis in the lead. As the laps unfolded Comis looked strong for his first win. Conceding the lead to Tony Le-May, it looked as though they both would pull away from the following pack. Alas at the chicane that had just seen Comis take the lead, there was contact and he was soon fighting to control the car sideways though the corner. As the crowd cheering the epic save, Comis was collected again by Dave Rees, whose attempts to avoid the incident didn’t quite work out. With the car clearly not performing, Comis limped home in a credible 7th after a fantastic last ditch battle with reigning champion, Neven Kirkpatrick, and Championship leader, Pat Ford.

“Ah I’m just so gutted” Comis explained in Parc Ferme. “I really thought I could control that result, but that’s racing. After the hit, there was something clearly up with the front left wheel and I struggled with stopping the thing in a straight line. Still, I’m sure I’ll get the car ready for Sundays race”.

The Sun continued to grace the Norfolk countryside for the decider on Sunday. For the final time, the grid of Minis launched themselves into another epic race. Again a metronomic getaway saw Comis tucked in behind Pat Ford for turn one. As the race unfolded an epic 5-way battle began and in true Mighty Minis style, it could have been anyone’s as the countless overtaking lead the excitement. Again, the driving standards were spectacular as moves were executed with millimetric precision. At the line, local man Tony Le-May took the flag from Pat Ford, the now newly crowned 2007 Super Mighty Minis Champion.

Comis was within one second of the win an just missed out on 4th place at the line. “What a brilliant race! I just wish there was one more lap. The car performed well, though it was not as strong as yesterday. Still not a bad recovery from an unlucky season. This has been the most competitive year I’ve known, so I’m pleased with my final placing.

I just can’t wait for next year! So, after 6 months and 13 rounds, Pat Ford took 1st place with Dave Rees, James Young and Mini Spares Driver Alex Comis rounding out the top four drivers. As always, the biggest thanks must go to Mini Spares for their continued partnership and support of the rising star, Alex Comis. Next season is sure to be filled with the same blend of action, heart stopping overtaking and good times that has been the foundation of the Championship.
