Mini Spares Articles - Jonathan Lewis - Silverstone and all thats good and bad
I have been flat out since my last blog to you all and I have had hardly a minute to my self or my family with building up Snetterton Speed Shop, the Minis have all had some work on them since Castle Combe in Easter. The 2 mighty's were not to mine or Justin's liking so we ordered some new suspension cones from Mini Spares and fitted them along with a good long set up and corner weighting.

I have been flat out since my last blog to you all and I have had hardly a minute to my self or my family with building up Snetterton Speed Shop, the Minis have all had some work on them since Castle Combe in Easter, the 2 might's were not to mine or Justin's liking so we ordered some new suspension cones from Mini Spares and fitted them along with a good long set up and corner weighting, as SSS is based at you guessed it Snetterton we have all the inner roads to play on and we sort of tested the mods out and they seemed to work and because SSS now has its new rolling road up and running I gave the 2 cars a good tune up so they were ready for Silverstone.

I have done the most work on the 2 Supers especially Chris Slades car as that has had a new Paul Inch motor fitted as well as a few new parts again from Mini Spares like brake pads and odds and sods.

I also had to go to Gaz dampers in Southend to have my dampers checked for legality as they were taken after Castle Combe by the scrutineer, I am pleased to say all my dampers were 100% ok mind you one fella was caught cheating!!

So we loaded up ready for Silverstone where Team bailey had grown to 4 cars as I was going to debut my new Super car for the first time and attempt to race in all 4 races as well as 2 qualiys.

We arrived at Silverstone on the Thursday night as I had ALKO one of my sponsors booked to fit a Mover to my Bailey Unicorn Madrid and also Paintseal Direct another sponsor were booked to come and treat the caravan and race cars with there magic coatings.

The trip to Silverstone was a very slow one as the wind was blowing like a hurricane all the way there against us, it made the loaded 4 car truck rock and roll all the way.

The Friday morning drew bright and sunny and our new team manager Westley Barber came to look after and coach us all, he helped young lady racer Ella Markham and young super star Zack Booth on the Friday as I did not need to test and Justin Cooper had to work so could not.

Between us all we got them both much better and by the end of the day and we were all looking forward to the racing the next morning.

The Saturday was blowing a holy again and I knew drafting would be a must in qually so I went out mid pack I managed to get a few good slip streams from a few of the others and I also helped young Zack with a few from me to him, we ended up with me on pole and young Zack alongside me on 2 , Justin was down in 12th but seemed happy with his lot considering he did not get any testing, something we are going to work on in the future.

The race came and to tell you in over 36 years of racing Minis it was one of the best would not be a lie as young Zack and i had agreed to work together to pull a cap on the rest and to race good hard and fair which we did for 20 minutes swapping places all the time, it was a great race and the TV got the lot so you should be able to see race one on Motors TV very soon,
Justin managed to get to 10th.

I had to run from the park ferrme to my Super which the guys at Team Bailey had got all warmed up for me and go straight out again to quaky in that car, it was like having a booster rocket after the Mighty and i loved all the power i managed to get p2 without any good drafts so i was very happy with it, Chris Slade managed 6th position which was very good as his engine is not yet one of the best or anywhere near as good as mine.

The race was later in the day than the Mightys and by then it was pissing down with rain and very very windy, great I thought I am good in the wet, (how wrong i was going to be).
In the first few laps I was all over Jamie White and even lead the race a few times but by lap 3 the car seemed to have zero crop and I slipped back to finish 5th and chris was 8th I started to have a good look at the car as I could not understand why the car lost all its grip, I could find nothing so was perplexed as to what it could be.

The Sunday morning came and the weather was windy, bright but with a chance of rain typical UK in May.
First out again was the Mightys and Zack and I tried to slipstream each other for pole we thought we had done it bang on as I was fastest from him until we found out Greg Jenkins had got pole never mind we had a plan for the race, Justin had qualified 16th and was a bit down but he needs to test and have some tuition as he is still learning the way to hang a Mini out.

I then ran to the Super in the pit lane again ready to quaky this time the car was fast on the straights but not good in the corners, I only qualified 7th and was at a loss as to why what seemed to be a fast car was so slow, Chris was along side me and so we were looking forward to a good race later in the day, but then i had to race the Mighty again.

The race came and it was wet, Zacks dad decided to fit his wets which in my opinion was wrong as the track was wet but not soaked, we all set off and by the end of lap one I was pulling away from the field and to be honest after the great race the day before it was boring as I won by over 12 seconds and got fastest lap by over 1 second, young Zack had a great race with a few cars and finished 3rd still a great result for only his second ever circuit race.

Justin not a fan of the wet managed 15th and we have now made a plan to try and get him more on it as I can assure you his car is awesome.
Then you guessed it run to the Super and get her ready for the race, we had by now discovered what was wrong, the tyres that came with the car were new but I had not noticed they were 2005 vintage and had lost all their grip, I had no more newer ones so made some radical adjustments to try and get them to work.

The race came later in the day and by now we had a full on Monsoon and I knew I was doomed but thought it would be OK to try and get some more miles in the Super as i want to do very well at the Mini festival in June.

I set off like a scalded cat and for the first few laps was right on the leader but just as before after 3 laps the grip just fell away to zero and I was a sitting duck to the rest of the grid and one by one the picked me off till I finished 6th, Chris managed 9th and so we have some new tyres to get and fit and a little bodywork to do on Chris's car as well as a new race head to try on his car, but I guarantee to you all I will be on the pace at Brands Hatch.

Please see all the pictures and remember we don't bite come and say hi to all of Team Bailey at Brands Hatch anytime and if you have a Mini that needs a tune call 07989565989 Snetterton Speed Shop rolling road in Norfolk all Mini Spares customers get a discount…
