A glorious September day greeted the British Super Mighty Minis Championship at Mallory Park, Leicestershire for round 11.

After a year’s absence from this venue, qualifying would be a chance to get reacquainted before putting in a fast lap. Comis had other ideas as he put in his fastest lap almost straight away and used the rest of the session to settle his new breaks in. “I thought there were places I could have pushed harder but I was generally happy with that. Sixth is a bit lower than I was hoping for, but I had to get the new brakess though a heat cycle so I didn’t want to over do things. I’m sure I can move though the field in the race from here”.

Lining up on the grid, the Mini Spares car sat behind previous Champions Ben Seyfried, and Gary Patterson. With the 5-second board shown, the engine rev picked up as the cars waited for the red light to go out. Again Comis made an outrageously rapid get-away as a sea of minis jinked for position into the 1st corner. By the exit of turn one, Gerard’s, Comis was well along side the number 1 car of Ben Seyfried and now up into 4th place. While challenging for 3rd Comis was equally sharp to the lunges from the 5th and 6th placed cars Seyfried and Kirkpatrick. As the race unfolded Comis slipped a place before an epic sideways moment breaking into the hairpin.

Though this lost him time he was still in the hunt. With the end of the race insight, further errors at the hairpin suggested all was not right although this did not become a problem, as 6th place was uncharacteristically a long way back. At the end of the last lap James Young took his second win of the season ahead of the 2003 Champion, Gary Patterson. Comis crossed the line in another strong 5th place. With smiles all round Comis explained his race.

“I made a great start and I was looking good for a podium early on. Unfortunately I didn’t work the new brakes hard enough in qually so I began to lose them at about half distance. That’s why I nearly went off backwards at the hairpin as I only had the rear brakes doing anything. Still, I managed to nurse it home to 5th though I was expecting at least a podium today. Rounds 12 and 13 move onto Snetterton, East Anglia on the 24th and 25th September. Comis will be all ready for the challenge at one of the fastest circuits on the calendar.
