The Super Mighty Minis Championship moved to the recently redesigned and rebuild Anglesey track for the penultimate race weekend of the 2010 Championship. With Comis’ performance over the last few round building, he came to Anglesey with high hopes;

“A podium shouldn’t be out of the question here, though Qualy may be challenging on new brakes and tyres!”

With the track located on the south-west coast just a few hundred meters from the Irish Sea, the weather at Anglesey has a habit of being a bit extreme. Luckily the combination of sun and a light cooling breeze was welcomed by all.

Qualifying, as predicted, saw Comis bang in one flying lap good enough for 8th after spending much of the session bedding in breaks and tyres.

“The breaks just kept going away from me as they bedded in. Now they’ve done a heat cycle, they’ll be good for the race so I should make up some early ground”

The glorious backdrop of the Irish Sea and distant Welsh mountain, greeted the cars as they lined up for the first of two races. With the lights out, Comis made another fantastic launch and was challenging for 4th by the first corner. As the lap unfolded, Comis immerged along the back straight in 6th, but was soon pushing the cars of James Young and David Hale. By the 3rd lap, Comis was up to 5th though defending hard while trying to catch the lead pack. The pressure remained for the duration and at the flag, a well defended 5th.

“That was a cracking race. I was able to push far harder than in qualy but I seem to have a balance issue and woeful under-steer; It made the tight sections quite difficult to defend but I was able to build a gap along the long straights.”

Race 2 on the Sunday and Comis was eager to get another flying start. Again a textbook start saw Comis pushing for places though he was unfortunately boxed in for turn one. Getting demoted to 7th, he was soon on the attack. Comis made a move along the back straight where he could exploit his straight line advantage. Alas once up to 6th place, 4th and 5th were by now a few seconds up the road. Comis in the Mini Spares car was clearly pushing hard as he kicking up clouds of dirt on the exits of the faster corners. Though he closed the gap, there wasn’t enough time to challenge the positions ahead.

“It was a good little race to start with but a little frustrating; The engine is clearly strong, but the under-steer and balance of the car meant I was wrestling with it though the important technical sections. I’ll check the suspension set-up and will have it sorted and on the sweet spot for the final 2 rounds. I can’t wait!”

Importation rules regarding vehicles are very specific: Only those over 25 years in age may be brought in to the USA without compilance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
