A gloriously sunny mid-August day was exactly what didn’t greet the Super Mighty Minis Championship for rounds 8 and 9 at Oulton Park Cheshire.

As has been the theme of this summer heavy threatening clouds watched over proceedings for qualifying. The session went like clockwork for Alex as he bagged 3rd place on the very last lap. “I knew that was my quickest lap but I thought it would only be good enough for 4th or 5th.”

By the start of the 1st race of the day, the down poor looked set to stay as the cars were lined up on the grid. A now typical start from Comis saw him almost take the lead from 3rd. As the train of cars headed though Cascades corner, Comis sized up the lead car but was then handed the top spot as David Kirkpatrick lost all power.

Comis was looking in good shape though he was soon being hassled by the closing pack. By mid distance he had slipped back as he struggled to find grip. With the oil flags out it was evident the conditions were treacherous. Paul Crees, also battling in the slippery conditions slid sideways in front of Alex. With nowhere to go, Comis collected Crees in a hefty side impact. As the cars came to rest, both drivers emerged though Paul was taken to hospital as a precaution and was later given the all clear. “That was a nasty shunt” said Alex as the work to re-build the front of his car began. “I managed to control my car, but by the time I had it all straight, I had nowhere to go.

It was no one's fault but it’s a big shame for both of us. It was like an ice rink out there.” Remarkably with, the help and expertise of all the competitors and crews that follow the championship, Alex’s car burst into life just minutes before the 2nd race. Taking up 16th position on the grid in a very sorry looking car, it was a very long way to the front though it was at least a dry track. Another textbook start saw the heavily bandaged mini snatch a handful of places by the first corner. By the end of the lap Comis continued with an inspired drive; By lap 4 he had passed a majority of competitors, and was now closing on the leading pack. With 2 laps to go he was soon closing in on 4th placed man, Neven Kirkpatrick. As he eat into the gap in worsening conditions he would have to settle for a still impressive 5th at the line and within a second of 4th place.

This was surely one of the drives of the day in a car that looked like it wouldn’t make it past the start. “I’m pretty impressed with that especially as the car didn’t handle at all well! There was no way I could have done it without, ironically, the help from my competitors what a comeback, and what a fantastic bunch of people in this championship!” Round 10 sees the Championship move to the epic track of Brands Hatch 9th September where for sure we will see the number 3 car back on form and maybe some sun!
