For the 13th and final time of 2006 the Super Mighty Minis Championship returned to one of the most epic motor racing venues in the world, Silverstone.

Though the Championship was buttoned up by Neven Kirkpatrick, 2nd place was still up for grabs and the fight between David Kirkpatrick and Alex Comis would be settled by the drop of the final chequered flag.

Qualifying showed Alex was giving it his all as he launched his car to a front row slot and crucially ahead of his rival. “It’s not a bad start to the day, however there seems to be an oil problem with the engine. It should be fine for the race though”. With the Early autumn sun glazing the Northamptonshire track, Comis lined his car up on the front row for the start of the final race of the year.

Launching off the line, Comis and Nev were neck and neck for the entire length of the main straight. Amazingly they synchronously turned in for the first corner and exited still side by side. Being hung out to dry on the outside, Comis had to yield for the back straight. Entering the stadium section at well over 100mph, no fewer than 4 cars attempted to take the lead as they barrelled into the breaking area; this was truly breath taking racing and belief defying overtaking.

As the race unfolded Comis seemed to lack the pace he demonstrated in qualifying. At the back of the lead pack, he was still in contention. By the closing stages he was beginning to drop off the lead 4 until the last lap. Technical gremlins hit Dave Kirkpatrick’s Car and Comis piled past into the last complex of Corner hoping to catch 3rd. Alas at the final wave of the flag, Comis crossed the line in 4th, with David managing to limp across the line in 6th. “It was a pretty good race for the spectators; Unfortunately the engine started to throw oil onto the tyres which didn’t help with my pace”.

“For a brief moment and at the last minute, it looked as though I could have snatched 2nd in the championship when Dave’s car died on the last lap. I’m happy with 3rd over all as there is plenty I can improve on for next year, and it would have been a hollow way to have gained 2nd” So as they say, that’s all folks. It’s been yet another breathtaking, heart stopping roller coaster season with gravel traps, braking problems and podiums poles fastest laps race leads and a well deserved 3rd in the Championship for Comis who already is looking towards next season!
