After the wacky races at Mallory, the Mighty Minis circus moved to the Northamptonshire track of Rockingham. Looking to build on his solid start to the season Alex, in the number 3 Mini Spares.com car, was keen to capitalise to bolster his championship hopes.

By the end of the qualifying session, Comis was on the second row of the grid with only Championship points leader Pat Ford and Ex-Champion Gary Paterson ahead. With the sun shining for the race, the cars assembled on the grid; Unusually, Comis missed his signature flying start and had to settle for 4th place by the first hairpin. At the end of the lap one, the race had settled into a rhythm, with Comis and Dave Rees matching each other in 4th and 3rd places.

The second half of the race saw Comis make a dramatic move, diving into the hairpin and stealing 3rd from Rees who was not about to give up without a fight. Once safely past, Comis began to reel in the second placed Pat Ford. As Ford fought with a car suffering from a fuel surge, Comis slowly ate away at the gap.

By the final lap Comis was on a charge, pushing the car as he locked a wheel under braking in to the final chicane. On the exit on to the straight, with the chequered flag in sight, Comis had a run on Ford and made his move. With both cars neck and neck, Comis took 2nd place with just 1/100th of a second splitting 2nd and 3rd. Afterwards a jubilant Comis described the race: “I didn’t get the best start, but after I got into 3rd place I could see I was catching Pat. It was incredible to manage to get 2nd place on the line, though I nearly didn’t.

I made life difficult for myself getting the chicane wrong under braking. Still, it made for a fantastic finish” Now sitting in 2nd place in the Championship, Comis is looking forward to rounds 3 and 4 at Pembrey in South Wales on the 12/13th May.
