More and more people are building highly modified Minis, some with engine conversions, others fitting items such as the Mini Spares 8 Port, all these parts can make fitting a speedo cable drastically difficult, and with limited availability of the correct combination of speedometer worm and pinion gears, it’s even more challenging to get your speedo to read accurately!
That’s no longer a problem with the new Smiths Electronic centre speedo. This speedo features an OLED screen where the old odometer would’ve been, which displays not only miles, but a trip meter, which is incredibly useful for keeping records for fuel consumption!
The new speedometers also feature a ‘Drive & Set’ function, this means that you can calibrate your speedo simply and easily without even taking it out of the car, meaning that if you have a 10” wheels and 4.1 final drive ratio you can easily reset the speedo quickly and accurately, as opposed to previously having to either find an accurate and matching drive set or having the old mechanical speedo re calibrated, which is an expensive and time consuming process.
These new speedos are currently supplied in 130mph in Black and Magnolia and in 200kph in both Black and Magnolia.
These speedometers do require a Hall Effect sensor in place of the speedometer cable in the gearbox; there are two versions one for the earlier type speedometer drive and one for the later.
These units fit directly onto the gearbox, and produce a digital square wave signal (PWM) for use with any electronic speedometer requiring 12v or 5v signal, unfortunately these sensor are not suitable for gauges that require a two wire sine wave signal.
Importation rules regarding vehicles are very specific: Only those over 25 years in age may be brought in to the USA without compilance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
