Over the last few years we have developed this gear kit to be the ultimate for the rod change gearbox! Although there are many advantages to using a straight cut gears, often their disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The gear whine can be tiresome and annoying on drives any longer than 10 to 15 minutes.

In the past most people have fitted straight cut gears to gain the closer ratios of the old Cooper ‘S’ and Special Tuning cars.

We have developed this kit to be incredibly strong, the gear teeth are in fact larger than any standard gear fitted during production, 2-3mm wider on 2nd and 3rd with 4th and 1st motion shaft being 3-4mm larger, this means these gears can withstand immense torque and horsepower numbers. Don’t let this fool you into thinking they’re not suitable for a less performance orientated engine however, the close ratio gear set make the car so much more driveable, in fact from personal experience 2nd and 3rd gear in our test car are absolutely brilliant, pulling like an train with our Mini Spares 1380cc engine.

The lay gear is actually made of two pieces that is then fusion welded together. We have cut a lay gear in half to inspect penetration and it’s impressive to say the least, this is the same technology used to make gears for modern day Formula 1 cars.

1st gear now has a ratio of 2.583, 2nd is 1.644 and 3rd is 1.250 and 4th obviously is 1.0.

These gears have been tested to the extreme in Bill Richards’ 160bhp fuel injected 8 Port; completing hundreds of laps around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit with our cross pin diff fitted.

When fitting this gear kit, we’d recommend using our competition baulk rings; they’re CNC machined out of steel and grooved accurately, we’d also recommend fitting a central oil pickup pipe to any gearbox but especially cars used for fast road/performance driving.
