The bias barrel was originally developed as part of our five speed gearbox package, necessary to facilitate accurate gear selection and gear lever position.
It soon became apparent that this device would vastly improve the gear change on the standard four speed rod change gearbox, endowing Minis and Metros with the ‘modern car’ feel, and taking the quessology out of gear selection.

FITMENT:
Position the front of the car either over a pit or securely on axle stands to give clear access to the gear change rods underneath the car.
With the engine off, select reverse gear. This turns the selector rod link barrel to give easiest access to the retaining roll pin.
Using a suitable punch and hammer, drive out the roll pin holding the gear lever change rod and link barrel together. Pull the rod backwards to disengage it from the link barrel.
Slide the bias barrel onto the rod, spring facing the back of the car.
Holding the bias barrel with the prongs of the spring upwards, fit the selector rod back into the link barrel, making sure the spring prongs are positioned closely either side of the steady rod above.
The spring clips must be within about 1mm or less either side of touching the rod, or the bias unit may not function properly.
Remove the unit and carefully bend spring inwards in a vice if this is the case beforefinal assembly.
Position the holes in the link barrel and selector rod so that the retaining roll pin can be re-fitted, then do so.
Move the gear lever into the third gear position, then do up the grub screw in the side of the bias barrel to lock it to the selector rod.
To check for correct positioning, sit in car and select first/second gears.
Doing this should need a little pressure as you are working against the spring on the bias barrel.
Then ease gear lever out of first/second gear, and it should spring towards the third/fourth gear gate, needing no more than to push it forwards or backwards to select either gear.
NOTE: Only suitable for ROD change gear boxes, NOT for remote types.
Importation rules regarding vehicles are very specific: Only those over 25 years in age may be brought in to the USA without compilance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).Author
