The formidable Cadwell Park saw the start of the 2016 Super Mighty Minis Championship. Though the sun graced the Lincolnshire circuit, the wind still had a bite to it as qualifying got underway. Alex Comis in the number 41 Mini Spares car was soon on the pace and although the session was red flagged after only 12 minutes, Comis was a mightily impressive 2nd.

“Yeah, that’s pretty good” exclaimed Comis, “I love this track, but it’s been one that I’m usually weaker at so a front row start is epic. I think there’s some more pace to be had, too, so it’ll be good to see how the race goes.”

Lined up on the grid for race one, with the lights signalling the start, Comis made a solid start and maintained 2nd place on to Park straight. Even on the 1st lap, Comis was showing his intent as he dummied a move under braking in to Park corner. Comis continued to hassle pole man, Ade Tuckley, until Ade made an unusual error going through Barn giving Comis the momentum along the start finish straight. Having now broken away from the Pack, Tuckley and Comis battled for lap after lap with Comis having to defend to maintain his advantage. On to the final lap and Tuckley was swarming all over the back of the Mini Spares car. Comis was able to manage the situation and as the 2 emerged out of Barn on to the start-finish straight, Comis held the lead and was 1st to be greeted by the chequered flag.

“That was a brilliant race” explained a thrilled Comis, “The car was brilliant and I was just going to sit with Ade to see where I might be able to pass him. When he had a bit of a wiggle through Barn I found myself in a position to capitalise and managed to maintain the lead to the flag. It wasn’t easy though, Ade was pushing hard.”

Race 2 saw the familiar start procedure get the race under-way. Comis, starting from 4th got a little too much wheel-spin but had already made up a place by the time they got to the Park straight. By the end of the second lap, Comis had the lead with a well-executed late braking manoeuvre in to Park corner. Once in the lead, Comis built up a bit of a buffer, though this was soon eaten away which set up a three-way battle for a majority of the race. Steve Maxted and Ade Tuckley were clearly eager to get ahead though it would be Maxted who would swap places almost countless times with Comis. With some breath-taking, heart-stopping moments, it could have been any one of the 3 of them to take the flag. 2 laps to go, and Comis managed to seize the lead once again with the familiar sight of Tuckley filling his mirrors. On to the last lap and Comis had to defend against every attempt Tuckley threw at him though Comis managed to hold the lead and take the flag for a double win!

“I can’t believe it! It’s just amazing to come away with 2 wins, it’s an amazing way to start the season and cannot wait for Donnington!”

Be sure to catch rounds 3 and 4 at Donnington Park where the Championship will be part of the Motors TV live event on the 18th and 19th June.
