They circumvent problems caused by standard ‘V’ belts being turned or thrown because of ill-fitting belts or mis-aligned pulleys. Guide plates on the crank pulley retains the belt whilst extra width on the water pump pulley allows self-alignment. The crank pulley is also machined to accept the ‘S’ type damper ring (part number 12A367) highly recommended for performance engines. The water pump and charging system drives are separate. This avoids excessive belt lengths and, should the charging system fail or belt break, the car can still be driven, as the water pump will still be operational.
Two sizes of water pump pulley are available – standard and large. The large one reduces water pump speed to increase cooling system performance. It is not applicable to all engine configurations however, the space available between the water pump and cylinder head being the determining factors (i.e. will not fit a small-bore engine with a large-bore head fitted.) Two versions of the charging system pulley are available. One has a 15mm shaft fixing hole for pre-985 alternators and dynamos, the other a 19mm shaft fixing hole for 1985-on alternators. Prior to fitment of the water pump system, it is advisable to remove any water pump locating dowels if fitted. This ensures the belt is not over-tensioned which would cause failure. Once fitted you should be able to turn the belt through 90º'bc relatively easily with thumb and forefinger.
