Mini Spares Articles - MSSK019 – QUICK RELEASE BONNET HINGESFITTING INSTRUCTIONS
10/12/2005

The hinges are handed left and right and unlike standard type are pre-shaped.

These can be bent slightly between bonnet mounting end and the spring clip to suit individual cars. Ensure that you do not bend the pre-shaped spring clip end, as this will weaken fixing strength. If the clip fits too tight for quick release, a tiny amount can be filed out of the hinge end as shown, not advised (figure 1.)

There are two sets of holes for the bonnet fixing which covers all vehicles from 1971 on. Check with existing hinge and bonnet for correct assembly. Wrong assembly will be noted quickly as bonnet will appear 1/2” forward. On the bulkhead, there have been different types of brackets. Ensure that you use the original bolt holes if there are more than one. The spring clip and hinge bend away from each other in opposite directions to give correct fitment (figure 2) into the bracket on the bulkhead using the bolt with a locknut attached. Ensure the bulkhead bracket is open wide enough to guide the hinges and spring in easily and only tighten the locknut to the point where it locks the nut on and cannot become loose. Do not tighten up the nut and bolt, as it will close the bulkhead bracket making fitment hard. On some cars, the bulkhead bracket has perfectly flat sides and the spring clip can be run on the outside making bonnet fitment easier.

Check everything functions correctly before using car.
