Any straight cut or helical competition gear set needs to be assembled by a trained mechanic and adhere to the following.
Never fit lock tabs to the mainshaft and 1st motion shaft. Clean the threads on both, plus the internal nut threads with Loctite 7063 cleaner or brake fluid if not available (not petrol or degreaser).
Apply Loctite 2701 to both the nuts and shaft threads to ensure complete coverage and tighten up to 120lbs only.
When it comes to dismantling the gearbox heat nuts that have Loctite on jto 200 centigrade and they will come off easily (this is not red hot). After securing the nuts any excess Loctite should be wiped clean. Baulk ring to dog gear face must be checked for new condition 0.050² maximum is fine with the 7 degree cone angle for the Mini application. Bearing in mind this will reduce during the early bedding-in stage at the rate of every .001 wear on the baulk ring bore diameter, will reduce the wear allowance (baulk ring gap) by .00814². Additionally the hoop stresses generated in the Baulk ring during synchronization causes the baulk ring to
increase in diameter further reducing the wear gap. The minimum gap new should never be anything less than .35² minimum on baulk rings available at this time. Check the gearbox in all gears to make sure they do not lock up before fitting. Ensure the main shaft bearing retaining plate has .001²-002² preload, this will ensure that the third motion shaft is not thrusting left and right when under load due to helical or semi helical crown wheel and pinions. Once the gearbox is assembled and the main shaft pinion and first motion nuts are tight, hold the 1st/2nd synchro hub whilst in neutral and rotate the 1st motion shaft gear-there should be none or very little drag on the baulk rings if everything is assembled correctly. If there is excessive drag on the baulk rings it will reduce their life and lead to clicking whilst changing gear or a tight /stiff gear change. Ensure the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th selector forks are a snug fit on the selector hubs with very little play between the two parts.
Also check the laygear has the correct end float.
Importation rules regarding vehicles are very specific: Only those over 25 years in age may be brought in to the USA without compilance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
